Announcement of PARnet-PC V0.4 on comp.sys.amiga.datacomm at 03-Sep-93
23:08:55:
To who is interested in PARnet-PC without extra hardware:
After some long night of programming, testing and debugging (and being
afraid of burning CIA's), I managed to create a PARnet connection between
a PC and an Amiga WITHOUT any special hardware. Only a slightly modified
PARnet cable was needed.
The previous versions of PARnet-PC were not quite user friendly, because
a lot of soldering experience was needed to build the special interface.
The advantages of the new version are:
- It's easier to install. Only a PARnet-PC cable need to be made. This
cable has on the PC side slightly different connections than on a
standard PARnet cable (Read the documents carefully!).
- The transfer rate has been increased with 250%. On my simple 8MHz XT, I
achieved 5.6 kB/sec. It's still 'nothing' in comparison with a 115200
baud serial line, but PARnet-PC still needs a lot of optimizing.
- The kernel code is shortened (more reada move instructions.
The DISadvantages are:
- Without the interface you can only connect 1 PC to 1 Amiga or 1 PC to
another PC. Don't try more, otherwise it will result in 'smoking' CIA's
in your Amiga.
- It will ONLY work on BI-DIRECTIONAL parallel cards. CHECK THIS FIRST.
Direct connections with other cards can BLOW UP your CIA's within a
second.
- I've still no source code to the NET: handler and NET: file system, so I
was not able to port these. The only transfers can be done with TCP/IP,
using the PARnet-PC packet driver (on the PC) and SPAR V37.X (on the
amiga).
Anyway, the description for the (old) interface hardware is still included
for those who want to be sure about their CIA chips.
Since PARnet-PC is BUGware and only interesting for developers, it's no
where available than on my FSP site (not FTP!) at: 131.155.2.49 port 6669.
On this site are also SPAR V37.1 (The Sana-II PARnet device driver) and
some other PARnet utilities.
When someone has the source code to the NET: handlplease send them to me. Only THEN I can make a real PARnet file system on a
PC (so you can do a 'copy NET:c/dos/command.com ram:' or whatever..).
